This 36-bed unit is a part of the Critical Care Division and follows the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses model of progressive care as part of the continuum of critical care. Its patient populations are diverse with systemic imbalances including, but not limited to: pulmonary, cardiac, electrolyte instabilities, sepsis, and surgical. Specific diagnoses include: cardiothoracic surgery, valve replacement, aortic repairs, revascularization, breast flaps, DKA, ETOH withdrawal, respiratory distress, COPD exacerbation, CHF exacerbation, GI bleed, new or chronic cardiac arrhythmias, sepsis, post-codes and emergency upgrades, and temp/permanent pacemakers. We receive downgrades from the ICU, upgrades from med/surg, direct admissions from the ED and outside facilities, and discharge patients about 40% of the time, otherwise they are transferred to their next appropriate level of care. This allows for increased variety of skill and a broad knowledge base expected of every team member.
