The Blood Disorders Center at the University of Colorado Hospital is transforming health care for our malignant blood cancer and general hematology patients by not only providing exemplary patient-centered care but also through world-class clinical research trials and our revolutionary partnership with the CU School of Medicine in the development of the CARE Innovation Center, a comprehensive service that brings together health care and leading industry and start-up partners. We are proud to be the only hospital in Colorado with five consecutive Magnet designations and were recently ranked as the #1 Hospital in the State of Colorado by US News and World Report for the 11th year in a row. We are also ranked as the #1 Employer in the State of Colorado by Forbes.
The Blood Disorders Center serves patients with Lymphoma, Leukemia, MDS, Amyloidosis and Multiple Myeloma, as well as rare blood disorders such as Castleman’s Disease, Hairy Cell Leukemia and Langerhans. Some of these patients will proceed to either an Autologous or Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant or CAR-T Cell Therapy. We also see patients with Myeloproliferative Neoplasms such as Polycythemia Vera, Myelofibrosis and Essential Thrombocytosis as well as other non-malignant blood disorders, including anemia, Sickle Cell Disease, and Thalassemia. Our program includes a Clinic, Infusion Center, and Apheresis Department.
The outpatient Blood Disorders Infusion Center (BIC) sees patients with very acute and urgent needs as well as patients with chronic illnesses who are stable and being seen for long-term follow-up. We are open 7 days/week to serve the needs of these complex patients. The Infusion RN is responsible for assessing patients who are coming in for IV support such as fluids and electrolyte replacement, as well as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood products. While IV is the most common route of administration, medications may also be given orally or subcutaneously. In addition, we do CAR-T infusions in the BIC as well as Donor Lymphocyte Infusions following transplant. We are currently in the process of moving our Autologous Transplants from inpatient to outpatient.
The BIC RN should be comfortable working in a very fast-paced and complex department where we generally see between 30 – 40 patients per day. The BIC RN will need to be comfortable working with a significant level of autonomy, working independently but being supported by a fantastic team of physicians, fellow nurses, pharmacists, research coordinators, a nurse Triage team and advanced practice practitioners all working toward the same goal of delivering outstanding patient care. The BIC RN will collaborate as needed across multiple disciplines to help navigate patient care, including working with our inpatient colleagues, the ED and Rapid Response Team and our supportive oncology teammates such as social workers, psychologists, and registered dieticians. In addition, we have our own dedicated Hematology Clinical Trials Unit and many of our patients are enrolled on a research protocol.
